"Robert Frank: Books and Films, 1947-2016 in Tokyo," an exhibition by photography master Robert Frank and Gerhard Steidl, founder of the German art book publisher Steidl, will be held at the Chinretsukan Gallery of the Tokyo University of the Arts Museum in Ueno, Tokyo, from November 11th to 24th.

Robert Frank is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of photography and film. However, despite his profound influence, his works are extremely delicate, and loan conditions are very strict, requiring high insurance fees, meaning most of them have never been made public.

However, this exhibition, which overturns the traditional photo exhibition format, prints the works on newspaper and then destroys them at the end of the exhibition, thereby lowering their commercial value and avoiding the cycle of sale and consumption. Furthermore, for the Tokyo exhibition, students from Tokyo University of the Arts were primarily responsible for everything from exhibition composition to event planning, publicity, and fixture creation, making it an exhibition of significant educational value in the art market.

The exhibition catalog was also designed as a special edition of the famous German daily newspaper, Süddeutsche Zeitung, following a standard format and printed on recycled newspaper. This made it possible to produce it on a low budget of just $5 (500 yen for the Tokyo exhibition).

A number of related events are also planned. A workshop by Steidl will be held on November 9th from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a lecture by Steidl on November 10th from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM, titled "Print Will Never Die: Analog Books in a Digital World," and "The Making of Robert Frank: Books and Films" from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM. On November 23rd, there will also be a screening of the new documentary film "Don't Blink - Robert Frank" and the "Suzuki Risaku x Matsushita Kei Symposium 'PHOTO & PHOTOBOOK (tentative title)."
