Our Thursday series features must-read books from each branch of the art bookshop NADiff. This week's recommendation is "MATTER / BURN OUT." It's introduced by NADiff Aichi, the Aichi/Nagoya branch (2nd basement floor of the Aichi Arts Center, 1-13-2 Higashisakura, Higashi-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture).

■ "MATTER / BURN OUT"

Photographer Yokota Daisuke was a participating artist at the Aichi Triennale 2016, which concluded on October 23, 2016. As part of the Column Project, he exhibited at "Transdimension - The Future Form of Images" (Okazaki venue), a project directed by Goto Shigeo in collaboration with several other artists. He presented a huge installation using 100,000 sheets of waxed print paper. The work, titled "Matter," is made using photographs printed on roll paper. It has been exhibited in various forms at exhibitions such as "anima on photo" (Unseen Photo Fair Special Exhibition, 2014, Netherlands), "Photo London" (2015, UK), and "JIMEI x ARLES: East West Encounters International Photo Festival" (2015, China), garnering significant media attention. The installation, first shown in Xiamen, China in 2015, was moved to a vacant lot after the exhibition ended, where Yokota personally burned the remains, recording the process of burning them to ashes in 4,000 photographs. The resulting work, "MATTER / BURN OUT," has been reprocessed and breathed new life into this new work. This book is a collection of photographs from the Xiamen burning performance. The appendix also includes installation views of "MATTER / VOMIT" from Aichi Triennale 2016.
