"TOBICHI", created by Hobonichi, opens in Kyoto, and Shigesato Itoi has given it the nickname "Circus"!

Jun 5, 2017

The third TOBICHI store, a gallery and event venue operated by Shigesato Itoi's website, Hobonichi Newspaper (Hobonichi), will open in Kyoto on June 6th (3rd floor, Kotobuki Building, 251-2 Ichinomachi, Kawaramachi-dori, Shijo-sagaru, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture). Following its first location in Aoyama, Tokyo, in August 2014 and its neighboring location in February 2015, the new store will open in a small room on the third floor of the popular Kyoto spot, the Kotobuki Building, on the 19th anniversary of Hobonichi's publication. The Kotobuki Building, a nostalgic building that houses a Minä Perhonen shop, a picture book store, and a gallery, was nicknamed "Circus" by Shigesato Itoi, inspired by the image of creating an exciting circus-like atmosphere. Additionally, the logo will remain the same, designed by Mutsumi Kagoshima, who creates ceramics, fabrics, and prints. From June 6th to 30th, the opening exhibition "Hello, Hobonichi" will be held. This will feature exhibits by familiar TOBICHI artists, including Atelier Shimura, which carries on the artistic spirit of dyeing and weaving artists Fukumi Shimura and Yoko Shimura; Kansai designer Toshiyuki Fukuda, who created a new "circus"-themed illustration to commemorate the store's opening; and an exhibition of original illustrations from Shigesato Itoi's "Little Words" series. Inside the store, there will be a corner selling Hobonichi goods, which were previously only available online in the Kansai region. On opening day, Shigesato Itoi will hold a standing talk, and visitors will receive exclusive free gifts of special kawara rice crackers, tea, and Toshiyuki Fukuda's "circus" postcards. There will also be a stamp rally that takes visitors to both Tokyo and Kyoto TOBICHI locations. Complete the stamp rally by the opening day to receive a "nice present," and the commemorative gift will be available even after the opening day.
