Berluti to sell penny loafers featuring a specially produced coin from the Paris Mint to commemorate its 125th anniversary

To celebrate its 125th anniversary this year, Maison Berluti is reimagining its signature shoe, the "Andy," into a penny loafer with the cooperation of the Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint).


Founded in Paris in 1895 by Italian-born Alessandro Berluti, who created the first lace-up shoe, the "Alessandro," Berluti has continued to evolve and innovate through four generations of artisans. Known for its artisanal expertise and unconventional appeal, Maison Berluti has honed its shoemaking expertise throughout the 20th century, approaching shoemaking with a sculptural approach, creating new iconic models, and introducing color to the world of men's footwear through the development of patinas. In 2005, leather goods, accessories, and objets d'art were added to the lineup, preceded by the brand's signature "Un Jour" and "Du Jour" briefcases, and in 2011, a ready-to-wear collection was launched, transforming Berluti into a global lifestyle brand. Since 2018, Belgian designer Kris Van Assche has taken Berluti's inquisitive and bold spirit a step further. His energetic collections and one-off collaborations, such as the Chandigarh furniture designed by Pierre Jeanneret, crafted from colorful patinated Venezia calf leather, are forward-thinking yet firmly rooted in the brand's heritage. To celebrate the brand's 125th anniversary, the collection highlights the iconic "Andy" loafer, designed by Olga Berluti for Andy Warhol in 1962. The loafer features an authentic "penny loafer," a design popular among prep school and college students in the early 20th century, featuring a half-moon-shaped notch on the saddle strap upper to accommodate a penny for making payphone calls. The decorative penny, engraved with the Berluti coat of arms and slightly curved to avoid rubbing against the foot, was specially crafted by Monnaie de Paris, the French mint on the banks of the Seine that has produced coins and medals since the company's founding in 864. Berluti's limited-edition penny loafers are available in four colors. Each loafer is crafted from supple, uncoated, full-grain Venezia leather, hand-patinated. The loafers in TDM Intenso colours are finished with Scritto leather motifs, the latest logo and a gold coin that combines the Berluti coat of arms in a signature canvas print, while the ice brown, deep Rothko and deep red patinas feature a silver coin. Additional details include a special insole with the 125th anniversary Berluti logo and a wooden shoe tree embossed with the new Berluti coat of arms.

The penny loafers will be available in Berluti boutiques worldwide from mid-October 2020.
