CHANEL's 2016-17 Cruise Collection features new bags that express a modern, sophisticated allure with a boyish chic aesthetic.
The collection combines Karl Lagerfeld's Parisian audacity and exoticism, modern, unrestrained silhouettes, and Cuban culture—flavors like vibrant colors, cheerful music, sunny scenery, and bright smiles.
Iconic bags such as banana bags, backpacks, totes, bucket bags, and minaudières express cheerfulness, the pinnacle of chic, and colorfulness. A rich mix of colors, including khaki, red, navy, royal blue, and green, and featuring elements from sequin embroidery to macramé fringe, range from pop to ultra-chic, simple to sophisticated.
Cuban handwoven macramé bags capture simplicity, enthusiasm, and the joy of living (joie de vivre). A flap bag covered in sequin embroidery reveals the message "Coco Cuba" when touched. This playful spirit is also reflected in casual banana bags and canvas bags with pin badges.
Military fabrics feature prominently in the collection, spanning a variety of items including backpacks, bucket bags, two-way totes, and shoulder bags. This fabric is also used for tote bags, and the pockets are inspired by the traditional Cuban shirt, the "guayabera," a theme of the collection.
Another backpack, adorned with elegant ornaments, features embroidered epaulettes in the colors of the Cuban flag. There's even a glamorous piece featuring Coco Chanel wearing a fancy pearl necklace on orange tweed embroidered with sequins.
The handles of the quilted bucket bag are adorned with gold metal Grand Creole and it comes with a military-style shoulder strap, creating a relaxed yet elegant look.
Other bags feature moon shapes and metal attachments inspired by hammocks, a symbol of the tranquil Cuban lifestyle, while for evening wear, they have been transformed into minaudières featuring a cigar motif, a unique symbol of Cuba.
The collection will be available at CHANEL boutiques from late November.
