SENSE Editor-in-Chief Moriya Talks with 9 Brands --Kitahara, Kumagai, Horikawa Edition--2/3

Mar 5, 2014

The fourth guest was Tetsuo Kitahara of BACKBONE, a brand Moriya describes as very close to him. Kitahara was also primarily responsible for styling the runway show held at the SENSE Festival on February 23rd at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium. Regarding BACKBONE, Moriya said, "In the past, BACKBONE had a rugged image, but as I've gotten older, I've started to value comfort," to which Kitahara replied, "I think it's because I've been exposed to so many different types of clothing as a stylist." Kitahara also commented that, as the brand celebrates its 10th anniversary, BACKBONE aims to pursue real clothing that anyone can feel comfortable wearing. The fifth guest was Kazuyuki Kumagai of ATTACHMENT, who was appearing at his first talk event. Regarding ISSEY MIYAKE, where he worked before founding his own brand, he commented, "For me, it was like a design school where I developed materials and conceived my own works." He designed a limited edition blue jacket and short pants for the project. "SENSE always uses black, but for this triple collaboration with Isetan, I decided to go with a blue outer fabric and a black lining," he commented. The sixth speaker was Tatsuro Horikawa of JULIUS, who rarely speaks in public. He appeared wearing sunglasses from KUBORAUM, a collaboration with his own brand. Horikawa, who continues to present his collections in Paris, commented, "For the past few collections, I've torn up the previous season and started from scratch. I only want to do new things." Moriya was impressed by Horikawa's comment, "Black is colorful. It's black, but there are various tones." As a limited edition for this project, he proposed items from the 2014-15 Autumn/Winter collection in different materials. He also mentioned that the structured silhouettes of the blousons and pants are made comfortable by adding polyurethane. To be continued on 3/3.
