[Gifts from Dries Van Noten 2/2: Hirofumi Kurino] Rediscovering the Essence of Fashion

Mar 17, 2014

For those of us who have watched, bought, and worn Driess's shows for many years, the archive images from his shows bring back memories and a new discovery. The entrance to the venue showed "The Beginning of the Show: First Look," and the exit showed an edited version of the "Finale," which alone was deeply moving.

The first runway I probably saw was his second men's collection (1992). While Driess's collections originally featured only men's clothing, women always appeared in the finale, often in the form of a "marie." Yes, in the past, fashion show finales often featured "marie" (wedding attire).

Of course, this tradition had disappeared during Driess's time, but his bold adoption of the "marie" concept in the early 1990s, showcasing men's and women's clothing together, was not simply a methodology, but rather a testament to his unparalleled kindness (love). At least, that's how I see it. It was a time when the essence of fashion had already shifted away from "inspiring dreams, making people feel good, and making people beautiful" and instead become a money game or an expression of designer ego. In such an era, Dries and his colleagues, the so-called Antwerp Six and fellow alumnus Martin Margiela, were striving to "return fashion to its rightful place."

Regarding the realization of this miraculous exhibition, Dries says, "I feel like a spoiled child." However, I believe the opposite is true. I believe this wonderful exhibition was made possible precisely because Dries Van Noten wanted the world to repay his faith in fashion and the "love" he continued to dedicate to his customers.

This exhibition is a gift from Dries Van Noten not only to his fans, but to all those who continue to believe in and love the essence of fashion.
