[COREDO Muromachi Gourmet Report] Uonuma-produced Ohagi from "Tsubariya"

Mar 29, 2014

The much talked about "COREDO Muromachi 2 & 3" opened on March 20th, and the newly renovated "COREDO Muromachi" has been a hot topic. We'll introduce three highly recommended shops discovered during our preview.

The first shop is "Uonuma Tsuhariya," located on the first basement floor of COREDO Muromachi 2. They sell Japanese sweets and rice dishes made with ingredients from Uonuma, Niigata Prefecture. There's also an eat-in space inside the store, where you can enjoy freshly made dishes that you can only get here.

Their signature item is "ohagi," made with glutinous rice (not koshihikari, by the way!) from Tsunan, Nakauonuma District, Niigata Prefecture, characterized by its chewy texture and subtle sweetness. The red beans and kinako used are all from Uonuma, too. The shop staff recommends the "Matcha" (230 yen), which has an exquisite balance of the bitterness of matcha and the sweetness of bean paste. "Oinari" (100 yen) and "Gomoku Oinari" (120 yen), made with Uonuma Koshihikari rice, are also popular menu items that are simply made to allow you to enjoy the flavor of the ingredients. Currently, they are also selling "Sakura Oinari" topped with cherry blossom petals as a limited seasonal item.
