Matsunoya, a retailer of traditional household items, offers a nostalgic yet modern selection of hardware and miscellaneous goods. The "Matsunoya Hardware and Miscellaneous Goods Exhibition: Everyday Tools" will be held at Bakurocho ART+EAT from July 15th to 30th. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the event, and each year, new events are added to the collection, entertaining many visitors. Regarding this year's featured event, store owner Hiroshi Matsuno says, "It's a workshop by Aya Ide, owner of Bouquet de soleil, where participants arrange summer flowers in Matsunoya baskets and colanders. We occasionally hold this workshop at Matsunoya in Yanaka, and it's very popular." Plant stylist Ide's flower arrangements, which connect nature and everyday life, have many fans, and reservations are already starting to come in for the workshop on the 16th. The 23rd will also be a sub-event day, kicking off with a "Dust Cloth Workshop" by the store owner's wife, Kinuko Matsuno. Until about 20 years ago, it was customary to turn unwanted fabric into dust rags, but now many people think of dust rags as something they buy. "Instead of loudly proclaiming 'reduce, reuse, and recycle,' I make dust rags out of old towels and hand towels. I hope that this will provide a time and opportunity to reexamine our daily lives," says Matsuno.

The store will also host a "Hardware & Miscellaneous Goods Talk Show," where owner Matsuno will talk about the craftsmen and production sites behind the baskets, colanders, brooms, and buckets he carries in his store. Hearing the stories behind these items may change the way you view and choose them.

What tools and makers are you currently paying attention to? "Recently, I've been working with a craftsman in Ibaraki who makes bamboo baskets. He has made about six different types of baskets and colanders for me. The work is neat and meticulous, and the subtleties are wonderful. The craftsman is an 80-year-old man, after all. I would recommend this to anyone who loves baskets," says Matsuno. At the exhibition, you'll find an array of everyday items, including baskets, colanders, brooms, buckets, anodized aluminum tableware, lacquered lunch boxes, original tote bags, and more. Come enjoy the world of hardware in East Tokyo, which gets more interesting every year.
