
To celebrate 400 years of Arita ware, the "400 Years of Arita's Charm" exhibition will be held from June 23rd to 28th at the event space on the 8th floor of Tobu Department Store Ikebukuro Main Store.
The exhibition will look back on the 400-year history of Arita ware and display and sell works by contemporary Arita ware masters and famous kilns and kilns that represent Arita ware. The "400 Years of Arita Ware History Exhibition" will allow visitors to experience the tireless trial and error and tradition of Arita ware over the past 400 years through approximately 20 pieces that show the evolution of styles, from the early Imari style to the old Imari Kinrande style. The "Special Feature on Famous Arita Ware Kilns" will introduce representative works and 400-year anniversary items from popular kilns such as Gen'emon Kiln, Koransha, and Fukagawa Seishu. The "Exhibition of Works by Contemporary Arita Masters" will introduce 28 artists who represent contemporary Arita ware. Other events planned include a potter's wheel shaping and painting demonstrations by ceramic artists and traditional craftsmen affiliated with the Arita Ceramic Art Association.
In addition, as a special Tobu event, food stylist Ayaka Endo will be holding a "Small Plate Coordination" event, where she will use catalogs and displays to demonstrate how to enjoy coordinating Arita ware small plates. Talk shows will be held on June 23rd at 12:30 and 1:30 PM for the first 20 people. Other events include a concert by leading wankin player Takashi Tsutsui; the "Arita Ware Plate Dance," a unique performance in the "pottery town of Arita" where dancers hold two small plates in each hand; a workshop where you can experience overpainting an Arita ware mug under the guidance of a traditional craftsman; and a talk show explaining the 400-year history of Arita ware.
