A one-night-only exhibition, "Zine Launch: Walking Through 'Astro-Zepp'," by Irish artist Lucas Dillon and British artist and graphic designer Russell Maurice, will be held at Gallery VOILLD in Nakameguro, Tokyo on July 11th.
Lucas Dillon and Russell Maurice are artists at the forefront of the Comic Abstraction movement, which refers to abstract expressionism in comics, and has produced works that mix surreal and psychedelically distorted elements with 20th-century comics from Disney and Fleischer Studio.
Lucas Dillon's recent work, "found objects," can be described as three-dimensional collages made from molds based on abstract charcoal drawings and sculptures. Meanwhile, Russell Maurice creates large-scale cutout paintings used to create sculptures. Similar to Lucas Dillon, his work incorporates collage-like elements, bringing two-dimensional paintings into a three-dimensional world. Both artists participated in the "Venturing Beyond" exhibition at Somerset House in London.
For this project, the two artists collaborated on a new limited edition zine, "Astro-Zepp," inspired by Tokyo and Japanese culture. The zine was produced using a unique publication method centered around anime and manga, elements of Japanese culture. It is produced in a large format that allows viewers to actually walk through the work.
A standard A4-sized version of the zine will also be available at the venue. Limited-edition merchandise such as pins and stickers will also be available.
