Like Roger Dubuis' first timepiece, launched in 1996, this new model features the Maison's signature bi-retrograde display. It offers an expressive, modern interpretation of the Maison's signature calendar display, combined with elegant, traditional materials, a classic and refined case size, and the unsurpassed quality accredited by the Poinçon de Genève.
Roger Dubuis was a passionate watchmaker whose expressive designs and approach set him apart. This originality is clearly reflected in the bi-retrograde display, a design for which he had a special attachment. It was a design that captured not only his creativity but also his emotions throughout his illustrious career, as it allowed him to highlight the ingenious mechanisms of his timepieces. In the late 1980s, Mr. Dubuis, together with the brilliant watchmaker Jean-Marc Wiederrecht, evolved, simplified and modernized the retrograde system, and used the patent when he founded his eponymous Maison in 1995. This patent was incorporated into the dial of the Maison's first timepieces, featuring a bi-retrograde display, which, combined with a chronograph, created a style that was extremely expressive.

The biretrograde system requires an intricate coordination of cams, rakes, clicks and springs, allowing the calendar hand to gracefully move along a semicircular scale, complete a full circle, then return to zero and start the same process again. The new Excalibur Monobalancier Biretrograde Calendar features beautifully angled, skeletonised hands that indicate the current date and time, allowing viewers to admire the graceful movement of these intricately crafted components.
Its refined size of 40mm is typical of models produced by Roger Dubuis in the 1990s. The slim case is crafted from 18K pink gold and the dial features white mother-of-pearl. Roger Dubuis was one of the first Manufactures to use pink gold and mother-of-pearl in men's watches in the early 2000s, so these materials hold a special significance, embodying the Maison's refined craftsmanship and innovative spirit. They are complemented by a three-dimensional brown calfskin leather strap with an interchangeable pink gold triple-folding buckle.

The Maison's approach to its signature bi-retrograde display is also evident in the design of the 2025 model. Like the 1996 model, the scales taper from the periphery to the center, creating expressive curves and a unique ellipsis. This detail borrows from the Maison's past designs, while other distinctive features are also derived from Roger Dubuis' traditional design tradition. The dial, with its balanced biretrograde scales, shares the same symmetrical design as the 1996 model. The small seconds counter at 6 o'clock is also aligned with the 12 o'clock inscription, which features the words "BIRETROGRADE CALENDAR" in the Maison's traditional typeface and the Geneva Seal emblem, reminiscent of the Muchmore Biretrograde Calendar model introduced in the early 2000s. This detail is another subtle homage to the Maison's 30th anniversary.

Behind the Excalibur Monobalancier Bi-Retrograde Calendar's stunning exterior is the Caliber RD840. This automatic movement offers a power reserve of approximately 60 hours, and the sapphire crystal case back reveals its captivating rotor. While retaining the style of the first rotor created by the Maison in 1996, it has been updated with a more contemporary design. Once again, this offers a glimpse into the inner workings and a glimpse into the meticulous attention to detail that has earned the Maison the Hallmark of Geneva.
For Roger Dubuis, the Hallmark of Geneva was a philosophy in itself. More than just a timepiece, it is a benchmark of watchmaking philosophy and approach, a theory of design and performance that offers the deepest measure of the quality of craftsmanship. To meet the strict quality standards of the Hallmark of Geneva, all components of the Calibre RD840 are decorated and polished by hand to guarantee impeccable results.

As a lasting tribute to Roger Dubuis' co-founders, their thought-provoking quotes are inscribed on a ring placed beneath the sapphire crystal. The quote, written in classic cursive script, is also engraved on the rotor of past timepieces from the Maison, further establishing a link between this milestone year and the past.
Officially unveiled at Watches & Wonders Geneva 2025, the Excalibur Monobalancier Biretrograde Calendar is a pure homage to Roger Dubuis' 30th anniversary. Its architecture seamlessly bridges the gap between past and present, elevating the Maison's heritage into a timepiece that embodies excellence and elegance.
