Dries Van Noten held his Spring/Summer 2017 men's collection show at the Bercy Arena on June 23rd. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, advocated by designer William Morris to revive skills that were being lost after the Industrial Revolution, the collection emphasized handcrafted work and celebrated the beauty of handicrafts. While some motifs were directly influenced by William Morris's designs, this season's collections were particularly striking, citing ancient tapestries from Flanders and Aubusson. A photograph of the parrot seen on the edge of the Baroque-era "The Discovery of Moses" was printed on a blouson jacket, while flowers from medieval tapestries were featured on bombers. Each piece was printed on a textured material, so much so that it could be mistaken for an actual tapestry. Camouflage, which Van Noten says was inspired by his research into tapestry motifs, was also incorporated into various pieces. Each look was beautifully adorned with pieces that had been carefully crafted over time, such as intricate knitwear inspired by textiles and ceramics, and hand-knitted macramé fringe. Patchwork denim print coats and patchwork blousons were adorned with calligraphy by St. Petersburg-based Pokras Lampas, adding a sense of depth to the collection.
