Approximately 80 masterpieces from the UBS art collection by 12 artists, including Freud, Luchey, and Nobuyoshi Araki, will be on display.

Jun 23, 2016
The UBS Art Collection, the world's largest privately held contemporary art collection, will be exhibited at the Tokyo Station Gallery in Marunouchi, Tokyo, from July 2 to September 4. The exhibition, "12 Rooms, 12 Artists: From the UBS Art Collection," will be held from July 2 to September 4. UBS, a global financial group celebrating its 50th anniversary in Japan this year, has long supported the arts, particularly contemporary art. This is particularly evident in its support of Art Basel, the world's largest art fair, and the Guggenheim-UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, an intercultural project co-hosted with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. While not housed in a permanent exhibition facility, UBS's art collection, housed in over 837 locations in over 56 countries, encompasses a wide range of genres, including painting, printmaking, photography, video art, and sculpture. The collection boasts over 30,000 works, spanning a wide range of regions, primarily Europe, the United States, and Asia. UBS, which has presented exhibitions at numerous museums, including London's Tate Modern, New York's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), and Roppongi's Mori Art Museum, is currently hosting a solo exhibition by photographer Annie Leibovitz, which began in London in January and will travel to 10 cities around the world, including Tokyo. This exhibition transforms the Tokyo Station Gallery's unique space, housed in the historic Marunouchi Building of Tokyo Station, originally constructed in 1914, into a collection of 12 rooms, each dedicated to 12 artists carefully selected from the UBS Art Collection. The exhibition features approximately 80 paintings, photographs, and other works, centered around oil paintings and prints by Lucian Freud, a leading 20th-century British painter known as the grandson of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, as well as works by Ed Lushay, who has pioneered the field of conceptual art through writing, advertising, and artist books. In addition to Freud and Lu Shay, the exhibiting artists include Nobuyoshi Araki, Anthony Caro, Chen Jie-ren, Sandro Chia, David Hockney, Isaac Julien, Rivani Neuenschwander, Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Mimmo Palladino, and Susan Rosenberg. Along with introducing artists whose work is rarely seen together in Japan, why not enjoy this exhibition that reinterprets the museum's unique, tasteful space through striking artworks? During the exhibition, there will also be workshops and a "Brick Touch & Talk" event, where visitors will learn about the museum's distinctive brick architecture. Further details are available on the Tokyo Station Gallery's official website.
