"Dali Exhibition" to be held in Kyoto and Tokyo! The first retrospective in about 10 years, featuring approximately 200 works that showcase the artist's entire creative process

Jun 26, 2016

The largest retrospective of Salvador Dalí ever held in Japan, "Dalí," will be held at the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art in Kyoto from July 1st to September 4th, and at the National Art Center, Tokyo in Roppongi, Tokyo from September 14th to December 12th.

Born in Spain in 1904, Salvador Dalí burst onto the Paris art scene like a comet in 1929, becoming a leading figure in Surrealism. In addition to creating paintings and sculptures, he also designed jewelry, stage sets and costumes, produced illustrations and films, and was a prolific writer, blossoming into a talent in a variety of genres. This exhibition will comprehensively present the full scope of Dalí's multifaceted creative activities through approximately 200 items, including oil paintings, drawings, objects, jewelry, books, and videos, centered around works from the world's three major Dalí collections: the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation (Figueres, Spain), the Salvador Dalí Museum (Saint Petersburg, USA), and the Reina Sofía National Museum (Madrid), as well as important works from Japan's collections. The exhibition will feature a variety of works, including early works such as "Self-Portrait with a Raphaelite Neck," in which the young artist Dalí poses in a manner reminiscent of a self-portrait by Raphael, whom he admired; "Portrait of Luis Bunuel," which features the impressive dignified expression of Luis Bunuel, who later became a successful film director and collaborated with Dalí on the film "Un Chien Andalou"; "Back of a Girl," which depicts the back of Dalí's sister Ana Maria, who was four years younger than him; "Magnificent Monument to a Child and a Woman," an imposing tower in which various objects, including human heads and hands, Napoleon, and the Mona Lisa, blend as if decaying; and "Melancholic Idyll of Uranium and Atoms," which Dalí created after learning of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
