Experience rock at the cinema with David Bowie, Oasis, and more at Cine Rock Festival 2016 in Ginza

Jul 22, 2016

Cine Rock Festival 2016, where you can enjoy rock movies at the cinema, will be held from July 23rd to August 5th at Marunouchi Piccadilly in Yurakucho, Tokyo.

This will be the second Cine Rock Festival, following last year's. Using the latest digital technology, remastered footage and sound will be used to experience a number of legendary live performances by superstars, creating a realistic experience that makes you feel as if you're in the front row of the venue. This year, 22 rare rock films will be screened over two weeks in the heart of Ginza. The lineup includes "I Saw the Light," a music biopic starring Tom Hiddleston as the legendary singer known as "Roots of Rock," Hank Williams; "Purple Rain," an autobiographical coming-of-age film starring Prince himself; "Whiplash," in which J.K. Simmons plays a mentor who gives crazy lessons to a young man aspiring to become a great jazz drummer; and "Oasis FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL '09," featuring live footage of Oasis. Also on show are a live documentary showcasing Eric Clapton's signature songs; "David Bowie Is," a documentary set at a major David Bowie retrospective; "Queen Rock Montreal 1981," featuring Queen's 1981 Montreal performance, hailed as one of the greatest performances of all time; and Talking Heads' groundbreaking concert film, "Stop Making Sense."

In addition, this year's festival will feature live documentaries of Japanese musicians such as Kiyoshiro Imawano and Michelle Gun Elephant, as well as a three-day "Bakuon Day" event in collaboration with the "Bakuon Film Festival," which revives films with loud, delicate tuning using a live sound system. 15 selected films will be "bakuon screenings." For details on the screening schedule, screening times, and fees, please check the official website.
