The "Emile Gallé: 170th Anniversary of the Birth, Special Cooperation with the Musée d'Orsay" exhibition will be held at the Suntory Museum of Art in Roppongi, Tokyo, from June 29th to August 28th.
Art Nouveau was a decorative style that flourished mainly in European cities from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. This style, which sought high-quality artistry in every aspect of life, not limited to painting, sculpture, and architecture, led to the development of a wide range of arts and crafts. It was in this context that Emile Gallé developed his own unique world of expression in the three fields of glass, ceramics, and furniture in the ancient city of Nancy in Lorraine, eastern France. This exhibition explores Gallé's creativity from five perspectives: his homeland aesthetic, which he firmly embraced in his designs, including the Cross of Lorraine and the thistle, the symbol of Nancy; his influences from foreign art, including China and Japan; his deep knowledge of botany and biology, which led to his frequent use of plant and insect motifs; and his inclusion of memorable passages from contemporary writers such as Charles Baudelaire and Victor Hugo, which further enhanced his poetic and fantastical forms with beautiful melodies. The exhibition will feature approximately 100 works selected from the Gallé Collection at the Suntory Museum of Art, as well as approximately 20 previously unseen works from Japan. With the special cooperation of the Musée d'Orsay, the exhibition will also feature glassware being exhibited in Japan for the first time, as well as approximately 40 important drawings that demonstrate Gallé's keen insight and creative process.
