Kintetsu Department Stores' consolidated financial results for the February period turned to the black. Store closures had an impact, but structural reforms contributed to the positive.

Apr 11, 2013

On April 10, Kintetsu Department Store announced its consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending February 2013. Sales fell 7.1% year-on-year to ¥270.744 billion, operating income increased 9.8% to ¥3.497 billion, ordinary income increased 17.6% to ¥2.701 billion, and net income was ¥2.57 billion.

In the department store business, new systems were introduced at the Abeno store, a large store in the city center. Regional anchor stores also underwent renovations to the women's clothing and cosmetics departments, but the closure of the Hirakata store at the end of February last year and the downsizing of the Kikyogaoka store had an impact. While sales continued to decline, the company ultimately posted a profit thanks to structural reforms, such as labor cost reductions, implemented in the previous fiscal year. Kintetsu Department Store will be the anchor tenant of the Abeno Harukas skyscraper complex, a new landmark in Osaka. The company plans to open the "Abeno Harukas Kintetsu Main Store Tower Building" this summer, followed by the renovation of the current Abeno store and the conversion into the "Abeno Harukas Kintetsu Main Store Wing Building," with the grand opening of the entire building next spring as the "Abeno Harukas Kintetsu Main Store." For the time being, the company plans to focus its management resources on the new flagship store, which has great potential. For the next fiscal year, the company expects consolidated sales to increase 7.1% year-on-year to ¥290 billion, operating profit to increase 31.5% to ¥4.6 billion, ordinary profit to increase 25.9% to ¥3.4 billion, and net income to decrease 26.1% to ¥1.9 billion. While the early opening of Abeno Harukas is expected to increase sales, net income is expected to decline due to the recording of fixed asset disposal losses associated with store renovations and increased taxes.
