Christian Lacroix, who closed his own fashion house and ceased working as a couturier in 2009, continues to work in European museums and costume design. This July, he will design a couture collection to honor Elsa Schiaparelli, founder of the Schiaparelli brand. After moving from Europe to New York, Schiaparelli opened her first shop in Paris in 1925. Her innovative, avant-garde approach, fusing fashion and art, was particularly popular among wealthy Americans at the time, and she is considered one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. The event will be held at 21 Place Vendôme in Paris, where she first had her atelier. Lacroix will present 15 pieces at this historic location for the fashion house, reinterpreting Schiaparelli's iconic creations and paying homage to her legacy.
Lacroix also said of Schiaparelli, "She was the embodiment of aristocracy in the truest sense. Mathematics, literature, and poetry coexisted in her heart, and like a sacred Sphinx, she always posed new mysteries and continued to question us. My wish is to place Elsa, who once captivated the world, at the heart of the Maison and to have her once again stand on the stage."
This project is part of a global initiative by the Maison. Every year, contemporary artists will present works that add their own unique interpretations and new expressions to the spirit of Schiaparelli.
