TBWA HAKUHODO will be supporting the "Yoichi Ochiai x Japan Philharmonic Orchestra Project Vol. 4," a concert to be held by the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra on October 13, 2020.

The "Yoichi Ochiai x Japan Philharmonic" project has held three concerts since 2018 under the theme of "reconstructing the orchestra through technology." The orchestra has been spreading new appeal and value through events such as "non-listening concerts" that allow people with hearing impairments to experience and enjoy music together. This year, however, in search of the role of the orchestra amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a concert will be held at short notice to explore the new appeal of online viewing. The program and performance concept will be announced at a press conference to be held in Tokyo on August 19, 2020, with the attendance of Yoichi Ochiai (director), WOW (video musicians), and Hikaru Ebihara (conductor). On the day, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra musicians are also scheduled to perform live performances based on the program's program.

The current situation of "avoiding crowds" has forced us to reconsider the style of concerts. The performance title "A Concert That Does ____" embodies the fact that the originally planned concert was scrapped due to COVID-19, and our resolve to engage in "trial and error" in seeking out a new concert from that point.

"A Concert That Does ____" is not simply an online alternative to attending a performance in the theater; it offers a new viewing experience that can only be had online. While maintaining the orchestra's authentic sound and authenticity, we plan to offer the same concert as a completely different experience, whether it's in person or online. It's up to you to choose whether you want to experience a "place where new performances are born" or a "concert created online." Tickets for the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre Concert Hall performance will be available in limited quantities to allow for adequate social distancing. We encourage those who watch in person to tune in to the online re-streaming at a later date and compare the two versions. "A Concert That Does ____" explores the nature of concerts during the COVID-19 pandemic. The title's blank space invites you to ponder your own thoughts. And why not witness a reborn, "baby"-like orchestral concert?

■Statement (Ochiai Yoichi)
Like babies in the computer age, the divided orchestra and the new digital horizon
Reborn to Digital Nature

The orchestra is divided. It can no longer create the same forms as before. It is difficult to enjoy melody, harmony, experiences, and sensations in the same way in a divided world.

There is a movement to reclaim the constraints of distance via electronic technology. Many attempts are being made to transcend space in order to heal people who are exiled. Faced with the sudden appearance of a bridge to digital nature, we realize that we have lost the tangibility of the world. The world is now in a state of longing for mass, and this longing is now turning into nostalgia. We are not satisfied with this current situation.

We sincerely believe that a continuous process of experimentation and sharing is the solution to this spatiotemporal division in an era reborn on this new digital horizon. On a digital horizon detached from physicality, we discover every day that we still know nothing about listening to, seeing, and sharing an orchestra. The process of re-establishing the tactile sense and harmony of this world from the digital horizon is similar to how a baby begins to perceive the world; it resembles the sense of discomfort felt when learning the violin for the first time, or the elegance felt when receiving compliments on their piano playing for the first time.

There are many important things: connecting, loving our neighbors, dreaming, and having hope. Just as a baby born into the world comes to love the world as it touches it, we will return to the original meaning of the orchestra and bring our feelings about digital tactile sensations and shared spaces to fruition. What we are aiming for now is the first recital of this as-yet-nameless child, which we should arrive at through repeated experimentation and sharing.
