JINS enters the North American market, offering unique Japanese advantages in price and processing time

Apr 8, 2015

Eyewear brand JINS will open "JINS Union Square" on April 10th in Union Square, one of San Francisco's most popular shopping districts.
As the brand's first North American store, "JINS Union Square" will boast the brand's largest store floor space to date as a global flagship store. The store features the brand's signature grid-like fixtures and offers a lineup of over 1,200 items, including US-exclusive models. To accommodate a wide range of ethnicities and body types, two models, "Standard fit" and "Alternative fit," are available.
The store also features "KANNA," an automated lens processing robot. This is an improved version of the machine first installed at the Kichijoji store, and is capable of processing lenses for 63 pairs of glasses per hour. This reduces the time from checkout to receiving glasses to approximately 30 minutes.
In the US, it typically takes one to two weeks for glasses to be delivered. The average price is said to be $300. In contrast, JINS Union Square will offer items at four price points: $60, $80, $100, and $120. Leveraging these features, the company plans to take on the American eyewear market, which is estimated to be worth approximately $20 billion, or 2.38 trillion yen in Japanese yen.

In conjunction with the store opening, JINS also plans to launch an online store for the US market, the JINS Online Store. The company has also collaborated with NPOs to create eyeglass cases, with sales to be donated to the organizations.
