This collection focuses on materials related to paper, with a focus on washi paper, and re-examines the sensations that paper brings, from its texture that can be perceived through sight and touch to its emotional impact. What is the basis for the comfort we feel when we touch paper, and how is it conveyed? These questions led to research into the history of paper, how it is made, and handicrafts made with paper, and to undertake a wide range of studies that expanded on the ideas that could be applied to clothing. The clothing that was completed from this is full of individuality, conveying the feel of the hand and the texture of the material, and expressing the familiar and universal side of paper, the source of inspiration, as well as its primitive and poetic side.

In keeping with the concept, the stools for the audience installed at the collection presentation venue were made from recycled thin blocks of paper, a by-product of the pleating process used at ISSEY MIYAKE. This tissue paper, which is necessary for the process, is put into a machine to be compressed into a cylindrical shape so that it can be recycled after processing. This shape is then used to cut the stools to a specific height.

To convey the concept of the collection, we created paper garments (kamiko) made from hemp paper (mashi), which is made from the fine fibers of the hemp plant. Starting as a prototype as part of our research, these garments embody our determination to continue the history of washi paper, which has been deeply rooted in Japanese life since ancient times, and the tradition of washi paper-making, and they have been reborn in new forms through this collection. 2024 ISSEY MIYAKE INC.
