■ "Tsukuhae" Inoue Yoshiko (Wakayama Prefectural Museum of Modern Art), Fujimoto Manami (Wakayama Prefectural Museum of Modern Art), Teraguchi Junji (Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art)
In the early Taisho period, the poetry and woodblock print fanzine "Tsukuhae" was launched by art students Tanaka Kyokichi, Fujimori Shizuo, and Onchi Koshiro. This print magazine was published in seven issues between September 1914 and November 1915 by Rakuyodo, the publisher of the literary magazine Shirakaba, in a limited run of 200 copies. Although it did not sell well at the time, it is now regarded as a rare and important print magazine as it was a pioneer of "creative printmaking" in the Japanese art world, where Western and Japanese paintings were the mainstream.
Just as Tanaka Kyokichi, who contracted tuberculosis, which was considered incurable at the time, returned home to recuperate but continued to produce and publish prints and poetry as if to mark his life until the very end, their youth, spent close to death, was one in which they fostered each other through friendship and were filled with energy for expression. Furthermore, the publication of "Tsukikage" led to Tanaka and Onchi being commissioned to illustrate and design the book's poetry collection "Howling at the Moon," and their close friendship with Takehisa Yumeji also highlight the significant significance of their work in the context of art and culture. The Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art is currently hosting the "Tsukikage" exhibition (April 17–May 31) to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the publication. This official catalog includes color plates from all seven issues of "Tsukikage," as well as a private edition owned by Tanaka, Fujimori, and Onchi—the only remaining copy of which remains. The book also features a total of 344 images, including related works such as oil paintings and pen drawings, as well as letters, and even a chronology at the end of the book.
