Every Thursday, each branch of the art bookstore "NADiff" will introduce a book they recommend. ■ "Sawada Tomoko FACIAL SIGNATURE" by Sawada Tomoko

"I think the face is like a seal or signature; it's something that proves each person's identity, their ID." As she says, in 1998, Sawada Tomoko released a series called "ID400," in which she transformed herself into 400 different ID photos. Since then, she has produced many works using self-portraits.

Her latest work, "FACIAL SIGNATURE," her first in about eight years, is inspired by the artist's experiences living in New York. "I wanted to know what and where people look to judge individuals, so I disguised myself to look like various East Asians," and based this idea on the 300 self-portraits she took.

With each turn of the page, women stare directly at us. They seem familiar, they resemble someone, they seem like we're seeing ourselves, highlighting the strength and fragility of human identity and posing a direct question to the viewer.

The "Tomoko Sawada FACIAL SIGNATURE" exhibition, currently running at MEM on the 2nd floor of NADiff A/P/A/R/T, the multi-purpose art space that houses the NADiff flagship store, runs until April 19th. A publication commemorative talk and autograph session will also be held at NADiff Apartment on the 18th.
