EDIT LIFE TOKYO, a gallery shop in Jingumae, Tokyo, will host an exhibition titled "Let's go for a drive in Singapore" by photographer Shingo Wakagi and artist Mike Ming. The exhibition will run from April 25th to July 17th.
In addition to his work as a photographer, Wakagi has edited the magazine "youngtreepress" and worked on the film "Starry Night Waltz." In 2010, he opened the bookstore "BOOKS AND PRINTS" in Hamamatsu. Recently, he crowdfunded a new photo book featuring his childhood friends, Ei-chan and Hiro-chan, and directed the film "Shirakawa Night Boat," which is scheduled for release on April 25th.
Meanwhile, New York-based Mike is a painter and member of the creative collective "Barnstormer." He loves traveling and has built a deep relationship with Wakagi. Their collaboration, which took place across the United States in 1996, resulted in what would become their signature work, "Let's Go for a Drive." This latest release is a sequel, set in Singapore, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The work depicts the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, where large tankers pass through, the Bukit Brown Chinese Cemetery, which is scheduled to be demolished due to road expansion, and the water pipeline connecting Singapore to Malaysia. The saplings in the work reveal another side of Singapore, hidden behind its rapid economic growth. Furthermore, the work focuses on local creators who have overcome the death of founding father Lee Kuan Yew and continue to thrive despite their diverse historical backgrounds. Mike then applied art paint to these photographs, creating a total of 37 works. The series will be exhibited for three days from April 24th to 26th, with four large-format works and eight Polaroid-sized works being introduced each month.
A talk show featuring Wakagi and Mike will be held (reservations required) from 6pm on the 26th. Additionally, during the exhibition period, "MAKERS MAKE A CITY / Manufacturing and Urban Development" will be held simultaneously inside the shop.
