DEPT, a second-hand clothing store that opened in San Francisco in 1980 and closed in 2011 much to the regret of its many fans, reopened in Nakameguro on April 25th. The store is located at 1-13-12 Aobadai, Meguro-ku, Tokyo, 1st floor of mother River Side BOUTIQUE.

The store is directed by eri, the daughter of DEPT's founder Seiji Nagai and designer of the women's brand MOTHER. The first floor of the store, which was originally mother's flagship store, mother River Side BOUTIQUE, will be run as DEPT, and the second floor as mother Riverside Boutique. The first floor, 60% women's and 40% men's, features vintage clothing, accessories, and shoes personally sourced by eri from the US, EU, and elsewhere, as well as remade vintage items and plain items with original prints. The second floor will continue to feature "Mother" and the accessory collection "VTOPIA." Compared to the unisex, casual first floor, this floor offers a more dressy atmosphere, focusing on accessories and more formal wear. "I want to select items from a unique perspective that will make both former Dept. customers and new customers feel like they can find something interesting here," eri says. Perhaps inspired by a nostalgic sentiment, the first floor features a painting purchased by her father, Nagai, when he lived in the US some 30 years ago, bringing the atmosphere of the home she grew up in. To commemorate the opening, original striped socks (2,000 yen) will be on sale, and original bandanas will be given away to customers who spend over 10,000 yen (first come, first served, while supplies last). The store is also planning to open a second store this summer.
