Inspired by Thomas Burberry's expeditions, the Burberry Spring/Summer 2021 Pre-Collection

Jul 28, 2020

Burberry has announced its Spring/Summer 2021 Pre-Collection, designed by Chief Creative Officer Riccardo Tisci. The collection's lookbook was inspired by the expeditions of Burberry's founder, Thomas Burberry, and was created to celebrate the Burberry community. The photos were taken in front of each member's home in the UK.

"With this collection, I wanted to go back to basics and create pieces that are comfortable and empowering. I revisited the house codes of Burberry's heritage - the checks, iconic stripes and unicorn emblem that first inspired me at Burberry - but this time I've incorporated elements of both sophistication and street style through the lens of the outdoors. Britain is home to some of the most beautiful antique gardens in the world and I wanted to print the roses that bloom there across the collection's pieces. For the lookbook, I brought together some of Burberry's most talented team to embody the collection through their own personalities. I'm proud of this collection, which not only captures the brand's unique house codes but also the diversity of our Burberry community, enchanting and bringing that world to life."

Women's
Burberry's iconic gabardine outerwear has been updated. The trench coat features a Horseferry print, the brand's headquarters address, and oversized pockets. The car coat is made from organic cotton gabardine and features pockets and a removable warmer. New motifs include a love print on a Vintage check shirt, a striped wool barn jacket, and a satin bomber jacket accented with various graphic appliqués. Tailoring is plaid, with a houndstooth wool suit cinched in at the waist with a sports stripe, and a marigold yellow checked wool suit paired with a Vintage check shirt. A silk crepe shirt dress with puff sleeves and an English rose print is paired with tailored wool trousers.

Men
A double-breasted wool jacket and trousers are energized in seasonal check. A Westminster trench coat is paired with an unstructured hoodie and drawcord shorts. A Horseferry print car coat is paired with a hooded jacket and wool mohair trousers. A diamond-quilted barn jacket is striped and paired with raw Japanese denim and cashmere track pants. A bright yellow checked cashmere sweater is contrasted with a funnel neck top and drawcord shorts in an archive beige check.

Bags
The pocket bag and soft cube are decorated with a Horseferry print. The basket bag is in striped wool, and the E-canvas beach tote is in a floral print. The Olympia bag is reintroduced in black lambskin.

Shoes
For women, there are sculptural leather pumps and ankle-strap sandals. For men, the logo-printed leather sandals and Arthur sneakers are updated in gingham and monogram print.

Key Colours, Patterns & Prints
Burberry's house colours of beige, birch brown, black and grey are accented with red, marigold yellow and citrus. Ricardo's increasingly popular motifs include love print, deer print, and English roses, along with the slogan "Don't believe everything you think." Seasonal checks, stripes, houndstooth, and argyle patterns add a modern touch to the Burberry archives.
