Superb lacquerware and tableware take over the stage on the first floor of Isetan

Apr 3, 2015

Isetan Shinjuku is hosting an exhibition titled "The Beauty of Life: Lacquer and Ceramics - A World of Transcendent Craftsmanship" at The Stage #1 on the first floor of the main building. The exhibition runs until April 7th, highlighting the works of Yuki Hayama, a ceramic artist from Arita, Saga Prefecture, and Takashi Wakamiya, head of the lacquer art collective "Hikoju Maki-e" from Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture.

The exhibition features a collaboration between two world-renowned creators who utilize the uniquely Japanese techniques of maki-e and miniature iro-e painting, showcasing works rich in spirituality and storytelling.

Hayama, who is also a writer, created his works based on the theme of "nature worship and praise." Wakamiya added themed creations using lacquer and maki-e techniques to Hayama's ceramic works. Works on display include "Mankasai Tsubo," "Moon Goddess Moon Ring Plate," and "Lidded Container: Momotaro." The most distinctive feature of Hayama's work is that it is based on stories he himself wrote about the path of humanity, learned from history. The patterns on his ceramics express not only human strength and courage, but also weakness and transience. Through this exhibition, Hayama says, "Each piece has its own unique story, and the patterns on the ceramics have an inherent meaning and cosmic perspective based on their history. I want customers to feel the 'beauty' from within." Meanwhile, Wakamiya, the master carpenter of Hikoju Maki-e, is tasked with blueprinting the piece and charting the path to completion. The actual work is carried out by 40 lacquer specialists, of which 10 are members of Hikoju Maki-e. In addition, specialists with various skills, centered around the woodworkers, collaborate to complete the pieces. In recent years, Wakamiya has exhibited overseas, including at the Bahrain National Museum and the Tainan Cultural Festival.
