Rhizomatiks' Saito's Personalized Tracks, Roppongi Art Night 2015 Program Released

Apr 16, 2015

Roppongi Art Night 2015, a one-night-only art feast, will be held from April 25th to 26th. Details of the approximately 80-event program have been announced.
This year marks the sixth anniversary of the event, which will be held at seven venues, including Roppongi Hills, Tokyo Midtown, and the Suntory Museum of Art. This year's theme is "Haru is Akebono: Shining, Connecting, and Participating," and the event will feature art exhibitions and performances.
As part of the main program, the "Art Truck Project" will feature the Haru and Akebono trucks, which will be appearing throughout Roppongi. In preparation for the Olympics, trucks carrying supplies have been designated as Tokyo's symbol, and Rhizomatiks' Seiichi Saito has incorporated the personality of the city of Roppongi into them. Various events will be held based on the theme, "What would the city look like now if it were still alive?" During the event, one half of the art truck, "Haru-go," will be enshrined in Tokyo Midtown's Canopy Square. A lantern array display will display collected data about Roppongi, along with the truck's emotions regarding that data. Thanks to its friendly nature, the truck is happy to take photos. Artists MAHARO and DOPPEL will be performing live painting at 5 PM, decorating the truck's body with people, animals, characters, and more. Meanwhile, "Akebono," equipped with a giant mirror ball, will appear at Roppongi Hills Arena at 6:45 PM on the 25th. Along with a glowing jungle gym, it will add color to a live performance by the breakbeat unit "HIFANA." The truck will then move to the National Art Center, Tokyo at 9 PM and back to Roppongi Hills Arena at 10 PM, where participants will control the moving lights and mirror ball. Finally, at 3:30 PM on the 26th, the truck will once again collaborate with "HIFANA" for a performance at Tokyo Midtown. Other events include "Crystal Fireworks of Wishes," a three-dimensional fireworks display by teamLab that visitors can launch using their smartphones, as well as painting performances, dance shows, video viewing, flower performances, DJ sets, concerts, and Bon Odori dances. Talk sessions with participating artists, conferences, symposiums, and workshops are also planned, making it a weekend packed with contemporary art from morning to night.
