TeamLab exhibits new digital art at Milan Expo: a sea of rice using projection mapping

Apr 16, 2015

Two new teamLab titles will be exhibited at the Japan Pavilion at Expo Milano 2020, from May 1st to October 31st.

The theme of the Japan Pavilion at this year's Expo Milano 2020 is "Harmonius Diversity—Coexisting Diversity." The pavilion's message to visitors is a love for nature and gratitude for the diverse people involved in food. In response to this theme, teamLab has completed two works with the goal of "making it more of an experience and participation-based experience than just a viewing experience," and "creating an art space unlike anything anyone has experienced before."

One of these works, titled "HARMONY," features countless circular, plate-shaped screens. These are arranged to resemble rice terraces, covering the entire room from waist height to knee-high. Projection mapping from the ceiling projects images of rice swaying in the breeze and the water's surface where carp and shrimp swim, recreating the landscape of rice paddies, a quintessential Japanese food scene.

By pushing their way through the plates, visitors feel as if they are walking through a field of rice. Furthermore, the images themselves change according to the viewer's position and behavior. Japan's original landscape, born from the coexistence of humans and nature, is reproduced throughout the year.

In the installation titled "DIVERSITY," a waterfall, symbolizing Japan's fast-flowing rivers, is placed in the center of the room. A number of photographs capturing food diversity are released onto the water's surface using projection mapping.

After placing their smartphones in the device, visitors can save the images by touching them as they flow by. After viewing, they can remove their smartphones to view the saved images and read their details. By connecting the waterfall, a symbol of shared experiences, and the smartphone, this is an attempt to combine the sharing of emotions with the convenience of gathering information.
