British airline Virgin Atlantic Airways has unveiled its new uniforms, designed by Vivienne Westwood. Testing has already begun for airport and lounge staff.
The female crew uniforms are set-ups in the airline's corporate color, "Virgin Red." Male crew members wear sharp three-piece suits based on tailoring from Savile Row in the UK.
With sustainability in mind, all items were developed in collaboration with the British environmental organization Closed Loop Recycling. They use polyester yarn made from used PET bottles and fabrics made from recycled polyester clothing that has been turned back into fiber. Safety is also a priority, with ties and scarves designed for easy donning and doffing, and shoes with non-slip soles.
Approximately 180 specially selected cabin crew, pilots, and ground staff will wear the uniforms for several months to test their comfort and practicality. After checking various aspects such as fit, final adjustments will be made, and the uniforms are scheduled to be worn by all 7,500+ staff in 2014.
Images of the new uniforms have been made public on Virgin Atlantic's official website and a special page on Pinterest.
