Louis Vuitton, founder of Louis Vuitton and suitcase maker, was born on August 4, 1821, and died on February 27, 1892. He was born in a village near the French-Swiss border and began his career as a trunk maker at the age of 16.
In 1954, he opened the Louis Vuitton luggage store in Paris. In 1959, he established an atelier in Asnières-sur-Seine. His trunks, exhibited at the 1967 World's Fair, were highly praised and favored primarily by royalty and aristocrats.
In 1988, his son, Georges, created an original checkered pattern called "Damier" to prevent counterfeit products, and exhibited it at the 1989 Paris World's Fair. It won a gold medal. This pattern remains a popular and representative design of the brand. In 1992, the brand began selling handbags in addition to luggage. After Louis Vuitton's death, Georges took over the company and grew it into a global company.
