KuKuRuZa Popcorn, a Seattle-based popcorn specialty store, will open its first Japanese store on the first floor of the Dojunkan building in Omotesando Hills on September 14th. Ten flavors will be available at any given time, with the lineup changing monthly. The store offers a wide variety of flavors, from classics like "Classic Caramel" and "Cheddar Cheese" to more sophisticated flavors like "Maple Bacon" and "Truffle Fromage Porcini," which pair well with alcohol. Two types of corn—mushroom and butterfly—are used, selected to match each flavor. The "air-pop" method, which uses hot air to pop the popcorn without oil, results in a fluffy, crispy texture. Available sizes are S (350-420 yen), M (550-750 yen), and L (800-1,050 yen). The green packaging is sealed with a zipper to maintain freshness. Gallon cans and gift boxes will also be sold for gifting.
The unique flavors were developed primarily by head chef Jeremy and pastry chef Mary. There are currently three stores in Seattle and Saudi Arabia. Plans are in place to open in Egypt and Dubai (UAE) within the year. In Japan, an exclusive sales agreement has been signed with Chowder's Co., Ltd., which operates soup specialty stores and mini donut specialty stores.
