Demna Gvasalia's Balenciaga men's collection, presented its Spring/Summer 2018 show on June 21st, held outdoors in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris. While retaining elements of the previous season's "corporate dressing" reminiscent of corporate logos, the collection evoked a happy, relaxed atmosphere inspired by "Dad's Day Off." Mixing Balenciaga's signature cuts with Demna Gvasalia's signature humor, the collection offered a fresh, modern look. Many pieces were oversized and washed for a vintage feel, with a jacket featuring weights in the front to create a tangled, wrinkled silhouette. The bottoms featured a variety of pants that could be detached in three stages via a zipper. Trench coats were washed to create raw hems, and pockets were treated to look as if they had been forcibly torn, with pocket flaps and epaulettes severed. The collection is so thorough that even the sneakers have been given a vintage treatment.
What particularly caught the eye this season was a series of shirts packaged in plastic, giving the appearance of having just been picked up from the dry cleaners. The accessories reminiscent of dry cleaning tags hooked onto the shirt buttons were also humorous. Just like the classic shopping bag, the collection was full of surprising items with a twist inspired by everyday life.
