This exhibition features the French designer René Lalique (1860-1945), renowned in Japan for his refined designs, as a jewelry artist and a leading Art Deco glass artist.
Lalique first studied jewelry crafts at the École des Beaux-Arts Décoratifs in Paris, established an atelier in Place Vendome, and sold his work to brands such as Cartier. He was immensely popular as an Art Nouveau jewelry designer, with actress Sarah Bernhardt as a key client. He attracted considerable attention at the 1900 Paris World's Fair, and at the turn of the 20th century, he began his career as a glass artist, producing perfume bottles for Coty. It was around this time that Lalique, a company that continues to this day, was founded. In 1925, he exhibited a pavilion at the Exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts (commonly known as the Art Deco Exposition) in Paris. The glass fountain installed in front of it astonished the audience, expanding the possibilities of glass from crafts to architecture and truly making him famous as a leader of the Art Deco movement.
To commemorate the 160th anniversary of Lalique's birth, this exhibition will bring together approximately 200 pieces, including his most important works, including precious jewelry pieces from the Art Nouveau period and his captivating Art Deco glassworks. We will introduce the worldview of Lalique, who embodied the traditional French spirit of "elegance" even in everyday items.
