Printmaker and photographer Mark Johnsen's art exhibition, "U.S. Route 395," will be held from June 27th to August 23rd in the gallery space on the third floor of THE NORTH FACE STANDARD Futakotamagawa.
Mark Johnsen, a San Francisco, California-based artist, is driven by his passion to document the last frontier of the American West. His works incorporate elements of nature, both majestic and familiar, incorporating mountains, oceans, stones, and driftwood.
"U.S. Route 395" is a series of prints directly inspired by "The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido" by Edo-period ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige. It depicts several locations along the route that runs from California to Canada along the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains.
For Mark Johnsen, this route was a time for camping, fishing, and collecting geological materials, and it was the place that later made him realize his strong desire to paint the natural world. The diversity of the highway's terrain, from sparkling saltwater ponds to vast deserts and endless granite formations, is reflected in his magnificent and majestic artwork.
Original graphic T-shirts will also be on sale during the exhibition period. In addition, an art workshop will be held by Johnsen himself on June 28th. In addition, a reception will be held on the evening of June 26th, two days before the exhibition opens, where you can enjoy drinks and light snacks while listening to Mark Johnsen talk.
