"Fantasy Aesthetics: Japanese Eroticism in Contemporary Art" will be held at Bunkamura Gallery in Shibuya, Tokyo, from June 17th to 28th. This exhibition explores Japanese aestheticism, showcasing works by 36 artists, including Suehiro Maruo, Takato Yamamoto, and Mari Shimizu. Aestheticism is an artistic movement that spread across Europe in the late 19th century, placing the highest value solely on the beauty of the things being expressed, rather than on their good or evil or ideology. Characterized by unorthodox and fantastical expression, exemplified by Oscar Wilde, Edogawa Rampo, Kyusaku Yumeno, and Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, it has also influenced underground theater, subculture, and even modern-day Cool Japan in Japan. This exhibition will feature paintings, illustrations, dolls, and more by 36 artists connected to the lineage of aestheticism. Additionally, on June 20th, from 4pm, there will be a free talk event featuring aesthetician Tanigawa Atsushi, illustrator Sorayama Hajime, and doll maker Koizukihime. There will also be a signing session from around 5:30pm.
