TAG Heuer Celebrates Carrera's 60th Anniversary with Action Comedy "The Chase for Carrera," Starring Ryan Gosling

Apr 23, 2023
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the iconic TAG Heuer Carrera, Swiss luxury watch brand TAG Heuer presents the world's first Hollywood action comedy, "The Chase for Carrera." Starring brand ambassador Ryan Gosling, the short film pays tribute to the Carrera's storied racing heritage through a no-holds-barred car chase thriller that epitomizes TAG Heuer's "Don't Crack Under Pressure" slogan. Perfect for enjoying with the lights out and some popcorn in hand.

The film stars brand ambassadors Ryan Gosling ("Drive," "The Gray Man") and Vanessa Bayer ("I Love That For You," "Saturday Night Live"). In this quirky car chase thriller, prop master Beyer pursues Gosling in an attempt to retrieve his TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph, but Gosling is obviously not ready to give up his prized timepiece.

Produced by David Leitch's 87North Productions, the studio behind some of the most iconic action films of the last decade, including John Wick, Deadpool 2, and last year's Bullet Train, and directed by Nash Edgerton (Mr. Inbetween), The Chase for Carrera was filmed in Australia while Gosling was making The Fall Guy with Leitch. Both Gosling and Leitch had creative input into The Chase for Carrera, and the result is stunning. The short film features Gosling and Beyer in a high-octane duel, racing through a variety of film sets in a variety of vehicles, from iconic sports cars to heavy-duty trucks and electric production karts, in a blockbuster-inspired style. Set as a film-within-a-film, the film stars Leitch as himself, playing himself as director. It's a fitting tribute to the iconic timepiece first introduced in 1963 by TAG Heuer's legendary former CEO, Jack Heuer, inspired by the race track. Named after the notoriously dangerous Carrera Panamericana race, the TAG Heuer Carrera was designed with legibility and simplicity in mind, essential for drivers taking corners at high speeds. The result is an iconic timepiece. Elegant and minimalist, its sporty and bold design is a testament to Heuer's love for mid-century design, and remains relevant today, 60 years later.

What better way to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Carrera than with a world-first action extravaganza that most people thought impossible? The short film also features a neat Hollywood-style movie poster and timeless taglines. One is, "How badly did he want that watch?" The answer is, "So badly."

It's not just the special effects that make this short so compelling. Gosling first worked with Bayer in 2015, when he hosted the American comedy show Saturday Night Club, and the two discovered instant comedic chemistry. Their rivalries in the film are as dramatic as they are funny, and many of the film's best lines were ad-libbed by the pair. "Prop master?" Gosling asks when he comes face to face with Bayer. "How do you become one? First you get a bachelor's degree, then you study further and get a master's degree?" "Carrera" on its own doesn't mean anything, but when combined with "race" it can mean "career" or simply "path." In other words, it's a perfect name for someone who is not only bold but also independent-minded.

As you can see, this short film itself has many facets. From an adrenaline-fueled car chase to a slapstick comedy and a parody of a Western, it's not just many films within one. There are also many Easter eggs hidden throughout the short film, each one depicting the illustrious history of the TAG Heuer Carrera.

The film opens with Gosling being pursued down the hallway of an Art Deco hotel by a katana-wielding gangster. But the first person we see is an elderly woman entering a room. Eagle-eyed racing history buffs will notice that the woman is wearing the iconic white sunglasses of the legendary Jacqueline Evans de Lopez. This British-born Mexican television and film actress was not only the first woman to compete in the infamous Panamericana race, but also raced in the same race for five consecutive years, from 1950 to 1954, with her own Porsche. Jacqueline Evans de Lopez was a true pioneer who embodied the spirit of the TAG Heuer Carrera. Like the Carrera, she was not one to rest on her laurels.

With famous numbers and glimpses of legendary figures, the short film is filled with homages and allusions to the TAG Heuer Carrera's rich history. While the prop master may be the one desperately trying to retrieve the Carrera in the film, TAG Heuer's most iconic chronograph is far from a prop. It's a star of the film, alongside brand ambassador Ryan Gosling. In one scene, director Leitch says, "Now, tilt the watch toward the light!" The Carrera Gosling never takes off is the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph. Featuring a tachymeter scale around the dial edge and a "glass box"—a domed sapphire crystal that fits snugly around the case—this watch boasts a stunning, distinctive blue dial and a blue calfskin strap. This iconic piece has never looked more modern, and it's easy to see why Gosling wouldn't want to give it up. It's a timepiece worthy of a firm stand. Meanwhile, Beyer's character, the prop master, is wearing the new pink TAG Heuer Carrera Date.

The iconic pairing of Gosling and Carrera wasn't just a one-off film; they also star together in Leitch's upcoming film, The Fall Guy. In the short film, brand ambassador Gosling wears a TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph with its distinctive blue dial, while in "The Fall Guy" he wears a sportier black and silver "reverse panda" dial edition. This marks a world first for TAG Heuer, as Gosling will wear various TAG Heuer Carreras in several of his most iconic Hollywood roles. For example, last year, when Gosling played the perilously calm Agent Six in the Netflix spy thriller "The Gray Man," he wore a minimalist TAG Heuer Carrera three-hand model, further evidence that the TAG Heuer Carrera is a global icon in its own right.

Frédéric Arnault:
"TAG Heuer has always had a strong connection with Hollywood, with many silver screen legends wearing TAG Heuer timepieces, from Steve McQueen to our brand ambassador, Ryan Gosling. The Carrera has always been more than a watch. Born on the racetrack, the Carrera is a statement of daring and adventure, as well as the epitome of elegance. What better way to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Carrera than with this world-first Hollywood short film? It is a collaboration with David Leitch, one of the world's leading action film directors, known for his masterpieces "John Wick" and "Bullet Train," and stars Ryan Gosling, one of the A-list actors of his generation. Ryan is known for not only bringing his utmost enthusiasm to every project he works on, but also for his creative contributions, and this film was no exception. We look forward to another 60 years of incredible Carrera." "

Ryan Gosling:
"What impressed me most was how fearless the TAG Heuer team was, and how creatively flexible they were. Not only was this campaign very different to anything we've done together before, but it was also something completely new for TAG Heuer. When I was working with director David Leitch on The Fall Guy, I had so much fun filming that I asked him, during the shooting of an action scene, if he would be interested in collaborating with TAG Heuer on a new campaign. The film was about making a film, so we thought why not make the commercial about making a commercial? TAG Heuer made this happen so easily and with such joy, which made the experience both fun and creative for everyone involved. It was amazing that a luxury brand known for always executing such authentic and clever campaigns was so receptive to and executed on such a humorous idea." "

David Leitch:
"Ryan is not only one of the finest actors of his generation, but he was 1,000% committed to giving his best performance in this film. He was always very proactive and we were always open to making bold decisions together! In fact, we followed the same process as shooting a feature film, and the team prepared as if we were shooting a short action film. How can we be more creative? How can we make it more interesting? How can we make a golf cart energetic, fun and dangerous? These were the kinds of questions that were constantly being asked. With Nash Edgerton, who has an incredible knowledge of action photography, directing, and Ryan's creative contributions, I think we were able to achieve these goals."
