Dover Street Market Ginza holds its second "Festival" [Report]

Nov 19, 2019
On October 19th, Dover Street Market Ginza, a select shop directed by renowned Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo, held a one-day event called "Open House," featuring performances and installations by Japanese and international artists.

This event is held twice a year, and this time over 30 brands participated. On the top floor, you can enjoy organic food from ROSE BAKERY and music by musician Sami Elu, who makes everything he needs for his performances himself. The delicious food and soft yet fast-paced music meant there was no time limit, and the place was always bustling with people.

The sixth floor is mainly a sales booth, with jewelry brand BUNNY visiting Japan and selling collaboration items with GORE-TEX, as well as limited edition T-shirts and shoes from CHROME HEARTS and BUDDY.

One item that particularly caught the eye on this floor was LANDLOAD, created by Ryohei Kawanishi. This season's theme is Harajuku pop culture of the 1990s, and the lineup includes impactful items that will become the focal point of any outfit, such as brightly painted hoodies and outerwear, and accessories with colorful charms such as fried egg motifs.

Downstairs, you can enjoy a live performance by VOWWS, the industrial duo selected for COMME des GARÇONS HOMME PLUS's Fall/Winter 2019 collection show, as well as a video installation by STEPHEN JONES.

"In a world filled with counterfeit goods, I wanted to create one-of-a-kind items," said Jacob Skragge, designer of ALL BLUES. He was creating an installation that allowed visitors to experience 3D jewelry making, using a scanner that can take pictures 15 times per second, making it seem as if the objects themselves were miniature. Lined up on the table were scanned and turned into paperweights: the son of a friend who practices taekwondo, and Jacob's grandfather and grandmother.

Another standout with its high-tech construction was BYBORRE, a knitwear brand from Amsterdam, Netherlands. This brand develops its products from the yarn onwards, and programs the patterns into a machine, allowing them to produce the same design in an instant. What's more, they knit several tens of metres of fabric and cut it wherever you like, so you can enjoy different looks with the same item by changing the cutting position.

Among the many items, one that particularly stood out was the custom-made top worn by the mannequin at Dover Street Market Ginza. The three-layer fabrics "AO3" and "3D Fabric" were used in areas where warmth was needed, while the thin, highly stretchable "8bit" was used for the arms, which are used more frequently. The unique characteristics of each material were utilized.

Although it is a men's brand, sizes start from XXS, so many items can be worn by women as well. Other special order items include a scarf featuring the "DSMG" logo.

PZ Today, which held an installation in April and made a strong impact on visitors, is participating again this year. Art director PZ Opassuksatit often draws inspiration from things he sees while traveling, and this time he used a wedding-themed T-shirt in collaboration with doublet as a ring case to be placed in the hand of a man proposing, and also created a wedding cake.

Other exciting events include a talk show featuring Mari Katayama, who spoke in November with Simon Baker, renowned as the world's most important curator of photography and current director of the Museum of European Photography (MEP), and Keiichiro Hirano, the director of the upcoming film At the End of the Matinee; and a book signing event featuring Chris Vidal Tenomaa, editor-in-chief of fashion and art magazine SSAW, its creative director Tuomas Laitinen, and cover photographer Jordan Hemingway.

Even though it has just ended, I am already looking forward to the next one, wondering what artists will be performing.
