A rare example of Art Deco design, the Reverso has remained timelessly modern since its creation in 1931. Although the design was originally conceived for polo, a women's version was also created before its first anniversary, in line with Jaeger-LeCoultre's philosophy of creating technically sophisticated timepieces for both men and women since its founding.

Despite decades of social change and shifting tastes, the Reverso continues to realize potential unimaginable at the time of its creation. And now, in 2023, Jaeger-LeCoultre is reinventing the feminine side of the Reverso. Available in two eye-catching colors, the Reverso One Precious Colors features a lavishly decorated case that pays homage to the Art Deco style.

Art Deco Geometry

Originating in the mid-1920s and coined at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs (Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts) in Paris, Art Deco evolved in response to the tremendous social and cultural changes that followed World War I. Its energetic, clean elegance, emphasizing simple, strong lines as its organizing principle, reflected a new sense of freedom and hedonism that permeated all aspects of society. The surface decoration features recurring parallel and linear motifs forming chevrons and zigzags, amplified by color blocking and polished metal accents, creating a visual dynamism that remains captivating today.

The talented artisans at Jaeger-LeCoultre's Métiers Rare® (Rare Craftsmanship) workshop have interpreted these design elements and applied them to the Reverso One Precious Colors. A shimmering decorative pattern runs across the entire caseback, seamlessly connecting to the dial case-side.

With its front dial facing outwards, the Reverso One Precious Colors exudes an elegant presence, contrasting the white mother-of-pearl dial with the vibrant color of the enamel frame and the sparkle of the diamond-set gadroons and lugs. The dial features details that are characteristic of Reverso One jewelry models: thin gold brackets marking the four corners, applied numerals, and dauphine hands. The watch is presented on the wrist with a lustrous alligator strap in the same color as the case decoration.

Exquisite Decorative Craftsmanship
Flip the reversible case over to transform the Reverso One Precious Colors into High Jewelry. The patterns, rendered in black and blue on a pink gold background or in various shades of green on a white gold background, are rendered in miniature grand feu enamel accented with diamonds, creating a visual effect of depth and movement.

The process is rigorous, requiring the complete mastery of each skill and the perfect coordination of various craft techniques, starting with the enamelling. The white or pink gold base metal must first be sealed with a pale or transparent enamel and fired. Next, to create a pristine surface on which the multicolored design will be painted, the enameller applies multiple layers of opaque white enamel, drying and firing each time. Then, with great precision, the lines defining the geometric design are stippled by hand, seamlessly connecting the flat surfaces of the watch case to the sides. Only at this stage can the coloring begin.

The enameller hand-paints the entire surface with a very fine brush, creating various color blocks, until he is completely satisfied with the depth and intensity of each color. Once the colors have fired, he applies additional transparent washes of color. This final coating, known as the Genève technique, preserves the color and enhances its depth. This extremely durable surface is then hand-polished to a lustrous appearance, almost like a sheet of glass.

Simultaneously enameling the convex case sides and flat case back of the Reverso One Precious Colors is particularly challenging. This is because the enamel density must be different between these two parts to ensure better adhesion during firing. Equally challenging is the issue of color. Just as an artist would with a palette, the enameller mixes different oxide pigments to create variations in blue or green. With Grand Feu enamel, however, the firing at 800°C alters some of the pigments, preventing the colors from blending as expected, making the result unpredictable. The case of a Reverso One Precious Colors requires up to 15 firings and multiple drying stages at 200°C. Overcoming such challenges requires years of experience. All five enamellers at Jaeger-LeCoultre's Métiers Rare® workshop are fully trained in this Genevan technique.

After the enameling, the Reverso case is handed over to the gem-setter, who must work with absolute precision to ensure that the diamonds are perfectly set. Using the grain-setting technique, tiny gold prongs are lifted from the flat metal surface to secure each stone in place. This must be done without breaking the finished enamel, crossing the straight lines that define the color field, or disrupting the gem-set area. The setting of the 274 diamonds that adorn the Reverso One Precious Colors required 45 hours of painstaking work, in addition to 80 hours of enameling. A great advantage of Jaeger-LeCoultre having its own decoration workshop within the Manufacture and bringing together multiple skills under one roof is that the different artisans can work closely together, exchange ideas and share their creative energy.

The movement that powers the Reverso One Precious Colors within its case is a testament to Jaeger-LeCoultre's commitment to mechanical excellence. Entirely developed and produced in-house, the manual-wound Caliber 846 has been created exclusively for the Reverso and is shaped to the contours of the rectangular case, in line with Jaeger-LeCoultre's philosophy of product perfection.

Reaffirming Jaeger-LeCoultre's mastery of decorative craftsmanship and jewellery, this bold and feminine interpretation of the Reverso skillfully combines functionality, design and fine watchmaking, making it suitable for both jewellery and timekeeping.

About the Golden Ratio
The original Reverso design, created in 1931 at the height of the Art Deco artistic movement, is based on the Golden Ratio. Represented by the Greek letter φ (phi), a mystical number with an approximate value of 1.618, the Golden Ratio is considered to represent beauty and harmony universally. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is the most eloquent example of this principle in watchmaking. Over the 90 years since its creation, many variations of the Reverso case have been introduced, but the original proportions remain the foundation of the collection, and the golden ratio continues to define the Reverso design today.
