New York Edition: Exploring the Trends of Men's Fashion in the Next Decade Vol. 1 [Summary of the 2020 Spring/Summer Men's Collection]

Jul 11, 2019
Fashion journalist Tatsuya Noda explores the trends in men's fashion over the next decade. In Vol. 1 of the Spring/Summer 2020 Men's Collection Summary Report, we unravel the New York and London collections.

The New York Collection was held a month earlier than planned, with Alexander Wang leading the season.

When discussing fashion, a decade (10 years) is a significant period. Since the 1930s, when ready-to-wear clothing became commonplace, trends in both men's and women's clothing have been summarized by decade, leading to a spiral of revivals. This historical trend has been repeated, albeit with varying lengths of cycle.

For the first season of the 2020s, New York, which had previously been held last after London, Milan, and Paris, will now be held in the first week of the season. Alexander Wang presented his collection at Rockefeller Center on May 31st, about a month earlier than usual.

On June 8th, new concept stores curated by creative director Anthony Vaccarello, "SAINT LAURENT RIVE DROITE," opened on Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris and Rodeo Drive in LA. This is a typical Saint Laurent approach in an age where live streaming of runway shows on the internet has become widespread and early adopters around the world can share information. A few weeks later, new sneakers were released online, and in terms of the continuity of information in the age of social media, this may be a sign of a new approach for the house that is not bound by fashion week.

This season's theme was "DEEPER THAN NIGHT," with a black base and the inclusion of red, purple, and burgundy to create an edgy, hard-edged look. Zippers were used to add movement and variety to the silhouette of long, oversized pieces. Rather than Milan, where marketing is becoming more prominent, or Paris, where diversity is becoming stronger, it is London that has contributed most strongly to the brand's stable creativity and image.
