Korean singer-songwriter duo, Red Cheeks Teenager, visits Japan. A lively event with fans [Report]

Jun 11, 2019
On June 3rd, Korean artist BOL4 held a fan event at the Spotify Japan office. BOL4 is a singer-songwriter duo consisting of Ahn Ji-yeon (vocals) and Woo Ji-yoon (guitar). They debuted in Korea in 2016. Shortly after the release of their first album, "RED PLANET," the title track "Galaxy (Giving the Universe)" reached number one on various music charts. It was an incredible achievement for a rookie band just five months into their debut. Since then, they have continued to dominate digital music charts, earning them the nickname "Queen of Music." Currently, Spotify's listenership extends from Taiwan and Southeast Asia to the United States, reaching approximately 700,000 monthly listeners worldwide. This much-talked-about artist has finally made their official debut in Japan. Commemorative live shows will be held in Tokyo and Osaka, and they are also scheduled to appear at "SUMMER SONIC 2019" in August.

Twenty fans were selected by lottery to be invited to this premium one-night event, which took place just two days before the release of their long-awaited Japanese debut album, "RED PLANET (JAPAN EDITION)" (June 5th).

The event began with a preview of the album. Members Ahn Jiyoung and Woo Jiyoon explained each song by answering questions from the host. For this JAPAN EDITION album, the lyrics of the original release have been translated into Japanese. There was even a heartwarming moment during the event, when the group taught fans the choreography and danced along with them, and the event proceeded in a friendly, homey atmosphere.

In her home country of Korea, she is known as the "Queen of Music" due to her streaming numbers, so the quality of her music is high, and just listening to the album bit by bit here makes it clear that it is a highly artistic work filled with songs that combine popularity with individuality.

After the listening session, there was a Q&A session where questions collected in advance from attendees were answered. The members politely answered simple questions in Japanese, albeit a little haltingly, without the aid of an interpreter.

In particular, when asked, "Who are your favorite Japanese or international artists?", they named Aimyon, Shimizu Shota, Amy Winehouse, and The 1975, which was an interesting answer. While there wasn't a direct connection, there was a certain familiarity to it.

To conclude the event, they surprised everyone with a live performance of the album's lead track, "Uchu wo Ageru." While the performance was simple—just vocals, guitar, and a backing track—it further enhanced the premium atmosphere of the day, thrilling the audience.

After the event, Ahn Ji-yeon and Woo Ji-yoon posed for group photos with attendees, bringing a precious and enriching event to a close for fans.
