[LOOK] Chanel presents its Spring/Summer 2023 Haute Couture collection in Paris

Jan 26, 2023
The Spring/Summer 2023 Haute Couture collection was inspired by Gabrielle Chanel's apartment at 31 rue Cambon, which houses a collection of objects, sculptures and drawings – lions, dogs, deer, birds and camels – and where Virginie Viard and artist Xavier Veilhan first met and began their collaboration.

"For our third collaboration, I asked Xavier Veilhan to reinterpret the animal fables of The Apartment and incorporate them into his own world. The decorations throughout the collection also draw from the animal kingdom," explains Virginie. Embroidered on cropped tweed suits and coat dresses, kittens, corgis, rabbits, swallows and deer shine as brightly as the House's emblem, the camellia. The show began amidst the atmosphere of a village square preparing for a celebratory parade, with models emerging from among 11 animal monuments by Xavier Veilhan, made from wood, cardboard, and paper. "I love the unexpected," Virginie continued.

Chanel's signature suiting style draws on the codes of the women's uniforms seen in parades and catwalks. Virginie Viard's imagination was fuelled by the poetic scenes of the majorettes: top hats, bow ties, white gloves, lace-up boots, satin capes, pleated skirts and jackets, double-breasted or tailed jackets, tuxedo shirts, sequins, shorts and petticoats.

The dresses and jumpsuits are both light and sophisticated, crafted from silk tulle, taffeta, organza, georgette crepe and Chantilly lace, featuring layered fabrics, sheer details, ruffles, pleats, delicate straps and painted lace.

And just as every beautiful story must come to an end, the fairy parade of the Spring/Summer 2023 Haute Couture collection came to a close with Marie in a gown embroidered with swallows.
