White Mountaineering's evolving outdoor mix [2019-20 Fall/Winter Collection]

Feb 21, 2019
White Mountaineering's Fall/Winter 2019-20 collection was unveiled in Paris on January 19th. This season's theme was "Mutation." The aim was to create new products by combining various elements and changing the combinations of fabrics and details.

Due to demonstrations and strikes on Saturday, the brand's schedule was changed several times, and the start time for the show was also moved up 30 minutes from the original schedule. "It was a chaotic time backstage," designer Yosuke Aizawa revealed, but the doors opened almost as scheduled, and the front row was lined with the latest high-tech sneakers. The global vibe of the guests, clad in the latest sports and outdoor gear, gave a sense of the brand's position outside the typical athleisure market.

The show began with a simple rock tune that was a "mutation" of unplugged and electric. While the brand's basic concept of urban wear that makes use of the functionality of outdoor wear remained unchanged, the layering of multiple items created a futuristic image. The brand's signature mix of detailed patterns was also alive and well, with items such as a checked patchwork shop coat, a mosaic jacquard anorak, a jacquard knit with a native print, and a photo collage camouflage pattern.

The bottoms are versatile, with sarouel pants featuring different patterns and materials in different parts, an apron skirt set with checked patterns and materials, and cargo pants with different pocket positions that add character. The new Gore-Tex material is also cleverly combined with existing materials to change the volume of the fabric, and attached parts such as carabiners and buckles give the items a fresh look. This season's highlight was the collaboration with French mountaineering brand Millet, resulting in catchy items using '90s-style logos. Graphical items such as down jackets, down vests, backpacks, and oversized hoodies featuring appliqués on the front are likely to be popular. Other ongoing collaborations include adidas Originals, UGG®, Danner, Porter, and Eastpak. For the finale, models appeared one after another wearing monochrome long shirts featuring a collage of mountain and wave photos. The music, which is created to match each theme, clearly demonstrated the brand's attitude. Text by Tatsuya Noda
