Plastic waste used by project members in Helsinki over the course of a week
Plastic waste used by project members in Helsinki over the course of a week
Recently, growing awareness of preventing marine pollution has led to a growing movement to reduce plastic products such as straws, and there is a growing global trend toward choosing environmentally conscious lifestyles. In response to this trend, Zou-no-hana Terrace has already switched to paper and wooden shopping cups, disposable spoons, forks, stirrers, and other items, and is gradually introducing these changes to its towels and drink lids as well. This exhibition is an art project that reconsiders the use of plastic in our everyday lives, conducted in collaboration with members of the "Port Journey Project," a cultural exchange initiative based at Zou-no-hana Terrace that promotes creative urban development with port cities around the world. The overall exhibition structure was created by the Swiss design unit so+ba, a project member. The exhibition displays "original" and "real" plastic waste from approximately 10 countries around the world, highlighting the differences in lifestyles and encouraging visitors to recognize the global plastic waste problem. The exhibition also provides an opportunity to consider "our plastic," encouraging more visitors to consider how they handle and choose to reduce the plastic that is so prevalent in their daily lives, rather than simply using it unconsciously. Other planned events include a panel exhibit explaining the current state of plastic, a weekend workshop using used plastic, a talk event on the ocean and recycling, and a screening of a documentary about marine plastic.
