Ernst Gamperl is a wood turner and designer who won the grand prize at the LOEWE Craft Prize 2017, an international award organized by LOEWE Creative Director Jonathan Anderson, with the aim of spreading the beautiful handiwork of contemporary artisans around the world. This is his first exhibition in Japan since winning the award, and he is showcasing a number of his original, expressive works, including large-scale objects.

The opportunity for him to hold a solo exhibition in Japan began when Sonia Park visited a design fair in Italy, saw his work at first sight, recognized its appeal, and approached him about hosting an exhibition. This marks Gamper's third exhibition, following display by ARTS & SCIENCE in 2010 and AT THE CORNER by ARTS & SCIENCE in 2014. Gamper deliberately uses fallen trees for various reasons as materials, shaping them and bringing out the changes in shape that occur as they dry out, bringing out the inherent properties of wood itself, resulting in an impressive lineup of works filled with profound appeal.
The fact that we can interact with a work in so many different ways is precisely because the work's essence has such a powerful, unwavering force. We hope you will experience the profound depth of Gamperl's craft through his work.
The Arts & Science official website also features a page (https://arts-science.com/pickup/ernst/) that tells the story behind the artist and his work.
