Matohu Embarks on a "Palm-of-the-Hand Journey" [2019 Spring/Summer Women's Collection]

Oct 22, 2018

Matohu presented their 2019 Spring/Summer collection on October 16th at Space O on the B3F of the Omotesando Hills Main Building. The season's concept was "A Journey in the Palm of Your Hand: A Small Garment." This season's collection was presented in a presentation format, rather than a runway show as in previous collections. Designers Hiroyuki Horihata and Makiko Sekiguchi appeared first, opening the presentation in a reversal of previous styles. "This is a new way of presenting, the starting point for our new series, 'A Journey in the Palm of Your Hand.' It highlights the power of handcrafted craftsmanship and the power of making things by hand," they said. Next, the two designers screened a video documenting their trip to Tsugaru, Aomori Prefecture, this summer, showcasing the region's nature, festivals, and climate, as well as the Bunako crafts that were born there and the Shichiri-Nagahama embroidery research center. Three models then appeared on stage, explaining their aims and key points. The collection featured a modern interpretation of sashiko, with light, sporty designs such as coats featuring sashiko on the shoulders and waist, and jackets with sashiko on the chest and under the collar. Other pieces featured a sophisticated, lace-like jacket that paid homage to the kogin embroidery technique born from Hirosaki's climate. In addition to three garments worn by models, the exhibition also featured 20 garments worn on the body and works using "bunako" fabric, allowing visitors to see and touch how the sashiko is used. The brand was founded in 2005 with the concept of creating new clothing that is imbued with Japanese aesthetics. Over the first five years, Matofu has continued to create collections that question the very essence of Japanese aesthetics, with 10 collections based on the Keicho Beauty series, inspired by Japanese history, and a new theme, the Japanese Eye series, launched in 2010. Horihata said, "I'm not stopping fashion shows, but with times changing, I wanted to create something that goes beyond just consuming images. My theme has always been Japanese aesthetics, but the next five years of the 'Palm of the Hand' series will be the 'Ri' part of the Shu-Ha-Ri (transformation of the body, break, and bend) system, which is the 'Ri' part, which creates new things. I want to take on a variety of challenges without being limited to clothing." Sekiguchi added, "This isn't the end. The beauty of the palm of your hand can be found all over the world, so I would like to continue doing handicrafts that are rooted in the regions of the world." It has also been decided that an exhibition of the "Eyes of Japan" collection will be held at Spiral in Omotesando in January 2020.
