Comme des Garçons: Change. The Individual's Inner Self [Women's Spring/Summer 2019]

Oct 3, 2018

Comme des Garçons (COMME des GARÇONS) held its Spring/Summer 2019 collection show in the Beaux-Arts (National School of Fine Arts) hall in Paris. This season, Rei Kawakubo once again used her unique techniques to create a striking worldview.

The collection featured tailored garments crafted from premium materials and sophisticated cutting techniques, deliberately cut with scissors to reveal the fabric underneath through zigzag cuts, creating the impression of clothing worn directly on the skin. At first glance, the garments resembled pregnant women, but this was merely a design intended to accentuate their skin. These prosthetic-like bodies were crafted from hardened resin-impregnated fabric and covered in polyester material printed with tattoo-like rose motifs, graphic prints of the brand's name, and prints of newspaper articles.

The opening piece, a jumpsuit-style tailored garment, evoked the world of couture with its ribbon-embroidered lace, the mysteriously shimmering brushed lurex fabric, and all-over feather embroidery. The oversized coat jacket featured a wraparound system with a wide body, allowing for a variety of styling possibilities. Coat dresses, with cut sleeves and hips down to the hem, were paired with bodies that accentuated the hips, creating a mysterious silhouette.

While the combination of beautiful tailoring and a voluptuous body felt strange throughout, there was also the joy of catching a glimpse of a creation never before seen in fashion, and the fact that this happens every season made it impossible not to admire it.
