Mame Kurogouchi, designed by Maiko Kurogouchi, held her first Paris show. The venue was a corner of the Museum of Medicine, part of the Paris School of Medicine.
The theme of this season's Spring/Summer 2019 women's collection was "The Diary." From April 1st to June 17th, the designer kept a diary comprised of notes, photographs, and drawings, connecting these seemingly unrelated elements to create the collection.
Particular inspiration came from the Japanese paintings of artist Uemura Shōen, the first woman to receive the Order of Culture, and traditional festival costumes from around the world, giving the collection an oriental feel. The striking pale purple-blue mauve color was inspired by the color of the kimono worn by Uemura Shōen in "Evening of the Lunar Eclipse," while the patchwork-like lamé jacquard material was inspired by traditional festival costumes.
The layered styling, which combines complex items in complex ways, such as layering knit pants with a long embroidered lace dress and coordinating it with a top that combines woven fabric and knit, was fresh. In addition to the gown dress made from fabric woven with glitter, the oversized coat made from glitter also had a silhouette that was vaguely reminiscent of a kimono, creating a mysterious newness.
While each item contained oriental elements, the collection as a whole was contemporary, breaking down the boundaries between East and West.
