■ "Yamaguchi Sayoko: Wearer of the Future"
Official catalogue for the "Yamaguchi Sayoko: Wearer of the Future" exhibition currently being held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (until June 28th).
Yamaguchi Sayoko was at the forefront of the times since the early 1970s as the first Asian top model on the planet. This book chronicles her wide-ranging activities, from appearances at various collection shows, including those for Kansai Yamamoto and Issey Miyake, to commercials and advertising during her time as an exclusive Shiseido model, to her later collaborations with artists in music, film, and theater. It also features essays by seven of her close friends, including Seigo Matsuoka, Ushio Amagatsu, Toshio Nakanishi, and Fuyuki Yamakawa. The meticulous printing, designed by Gento Matsumoto, feels as weighty as a photobook. This is a valuable volume worthy of gaining a deeper understanding of the indescribable person known as "Sayoko Yamaguchi." The exhibition will also feature works not featured in this book, such as Sayoko's personal belongings and homage pieces by collaborating artists unveiled in conjunction with the exhibition. Through the individual Sayoko Yamaguchi, the art scene from the 1970s to the present can be understood, providing a space that can be enjoyed by both those familiar with her and those unfamiliar with her.
